What’s Wrong with Old Pipes?
In most cases, pipes do not last as long as the structure itself. This proves especially true for buildings constructed in the early 20th century, which typically have galvanized steel or cast iron pipes. As the pipes age, they break down, disrupting your plumbing or even inflicting massive water damage on your property. Even worse, metal from the inside of cast iron pipes can flake off over time, entering the structure’s system and tainting your drinking water. On top of that, debris and mineral deposits slowly build up inside your pipes. This constricts the water flow, resulting in low water pressure. While this begins as a mere annoyance, it can become disastrous if left unaddressed, as the deposits slowly induce cracks and leaks.
Signs Your Pipes Need Replacing
Your home's plumbing system is a vital component, but like any system, it has a lifespan. Here are some common signs that your pipes might be reaching the end of their life:
- Discolored water: Rusty or brown water indicates pipe corrosion.
- Low water pressure: Clogged or damaged pipes can restrict water flow.
- Frequent clogs: Persistent blockages might signal pipe damage.
- Unexplained water bills: Leaks or inefficiencies can drive up costs.
- Water leaks: Visible leaks or damp spots are clear signs of pipe issues.
- Gurgling noises: Strange sounds from pipes can indicate problems.
- Pipe age: Older pipes, especially galvanized or cast iron, are more likely to fail.
If you're experiencing multiple of these issues, it's likely time to call a plumber to assess the situation. Ignoring pipe problems can lead to significant water damage and costly repairs.

We called around to see if a plumbing company can install an In-wall-water-bottle dispenser and most couldn't. If they could, they quoted me some crazy amount or didn't get back in a timely manner. Robert was the REAL DEAL. He responded promptly and was super personable. He came out when our dispenser arrived to see where we can put it and when he left within hours we received a reasonable quote via email. Within a few days, his team (Ernie and another worker I forgot his name) came and installed the system. They were super friendly and so fun to work with. We also had some other valve issues, and again, Robert gave us a reasonable quote, followed up accordingly and got his team out the next day to replace it. LOVE LOVE LOVE working with each and every person at Good Guys Plumbing they made me feel like family and was on top of it! Robert, thank you and your team!- Jin J.
